Flags of the World: China

The style of the China flag may seem simple, but looks can be deceiving. There is a lot of meaning behind every design detail of this flag.

The entire background of the flag is red, which is an extremely fitting color for China as it’s the traditional color of communism, so it also represents the communist revolution.

The only other design details are stars in the upper left hand corner. The stars symbolize the people of China, under the leadership of the communist party. The large star represents the communist party, while the smaller stars represent the people of China and the social classes they belong to. Each of the four stars represents the working class, the peasantry, the urban petit bourgeoisie, and the bourgeoisie. The 5 stars are also known to represent the main ethnicities in China which include the Han, Manchus, Mongols, Hui, and Tibetans.

The flag of China was adopted in 1949 after 3,000 designs were submitted.
