Flags of the World: Eritrea

While so many other flags utilize a striped background and a triangle only on the left-hand side of the flag, the Eritrea flag features a red triangle at the hoist that extends to the other side of the flag, essentially creating two additional triangles on the flag. The triangles are colored green, red, and blue.

The green triangle represents the country’s natural beauty, blue symbolizes the Red Sea, while red represents the patriotic spirit.

In the center of the red triangle is a yellow wreath that contains exactly 14 leaves on each side, representing the years that passed during the civil war before Eritrea gained its independence. The wreath surrounds a single olive branch as a symbol of peace. The design of the Eritrea flag was specially created to resemble the official flag of the Eritrean People’s Liberation Front. The newest design was adopted on December 5, 1995.
