Angola National Flag

After its independence from Portugal, a new Angolan flag was created and adopted on November 11, 1975. It is a unique flag that stands apart from all others. When you see the Angolan flag, you’ll recognize it right away.

Two horizontal stripes make up the background of the Angola national flag. The top block of colour is red and represents the blood shed by Angolans during the national liberation struggle. The bottom block of colour is black and represents the Continent of Africa. Although the horizontal stripes make this flag stand out from others that use vertical stripes, it’s the emblem that makes this flag truly special.

It depicts half of a cog wheel, a machete, and a star. The cog wheel represents that nation’s industrial workers, while the machete represents its peasants and the nation’s armed struggle. The star represents international solidarity.
