Flags of the World: Greenland

Although you might expect the Greenland flag to involve the color green, nothing could be further from the truth. Instead, the entire flag uses alternating blocks of red and white. This is because Greenland was granted home rule by Denmark, which uses the same bold colors.

While the Denmark flag contains the Nordic Cross, the flag of Greenland does not. Instead, the background is made up of two horizontal stripes of red and white, with a large circle offset in the center towards the left. The circle is cut in half with the top half colored red and the bottom circle colored white.

Although the colors are borrowed from the Denmark flag, the colors have their own meaning in Greenland. The white color represents heavy snowfall, while red symbolizes the sun shining over the land.

The idea of a national flag first came up in the early 1970s, but no design was chosen. Later that decade, a contest was held and the official flag was chosen.
