How to Preserve Your Custom Flag
We sell a lot of great flag products at The Flag Makers! We are a comprehensive flag designer, which means we can design and manufacture everything from outdoor banners to table covers and everything in between.
We are known for our high-quality products that are built to last, but that doesn’t mean our flags are meant to last forever. Many flag products inherently take a beating, which means their lifespan can be limited.
Fortunately, that doesn’t mean you have to plan on tossing out your flag and replacing it any time soon! Although all flags wear out in time, you can greatly increase your flag’s lifespan if you take care of it properly.
Follow these tips for preserving your custom flags and you can continue flying them proudly for years to come.
Know what kind of flag you have
In order to figure out exactly how you should care for your flags, you have to know exactly what kind of flags you have.
Flags can be made with a variety of materials. Some materials can withstand the outdoors, and some can’t. For example, if you have promotional materials that are made out of 100D polyester, they should be used indoors or outdoors during special occasions. For example, car flags and hand flags can be used during the big game but should be tucked away when the game is over.
Other materials are specially designed to withstand the outdoor environment. Both 200D and 500D woven polyester can be flown outdoors, but that doesn’t mean they are completely weatherproof.
The longer you hang your flag outside, the quicker it will wear. You’ll get twice the life out of your custom flags if you bring them indoors at night.
Be prepared to do a little flag first-aid
A little TLC can go a long way towards getting the most out of your flag. If your flag flies outside, it will wear over time, but caring for your flag as it experiences problems will make it last much longer.
Many of the flags at The Flag Makers are fully stitched around the edges. That makes for a more professional flag, and it can prevent the flag from fraying, but that doesn’t mean the stitching won’t need a little attention every now and then. If you bring your flag indoors and see the stitching is coming loose, repair it right away so your flag doesn’t fray prematurely.
Rips and tears can be stitched closed too. However, if the rip or tear gets too large, it may be time to replace the flag.
Washing your flag
Although custom flags can get damaged, your flag products are likely to get dirty before they get damaged. Knowing how to wash your flag is important to keeping it looking its best.
Spot cleaning is always a good way to keep your flag clean. Washing away spots with water is the best way to keep your flag looking like new, but a gentle cleaner can also be used to wash away stubborn spots.
Some flag products can be thrown in the washing machine! However, that’s not the case with all flags. It is important that you read the care directions that come with your particular flag before you throw it in the washer.
Even if your flag can be placed in the washing machine, that doesn’t mean it can be thrown in the dryer! No matter what kind of flag you have, it’s always best to hang it up to dry.
Special care requirements when caring for the American flag
Every flag deserves attention to keep it looking like new, but no flag requires the same level of attention as the American flag. There are a lot of flag etiquette rules when it comes to flying an American flag, like bringing it down at sunset, and it shouldn’t be flown during inclement weather.
Flag protocol dictates that the American flag needs to be folded properly. You can’t just throw it in a travel bag like you do your other flag products! Click here to learn the right way to fold an American flag.
Caring for your custom flags is the best way to get the most use out of them, but the quality of the flags matters too. Cheap flags just won’t last very long, no matter how you care for them!
